Q: What do I need to get the mod running? Does it work with other mods and stuff?
Median XL supports both PC and Mac computers. It is a patch_d2.mpq mod (as opposed to an unpacked -direct -txt mod) which means installation is very easy.
This is what you must have installed in order to play Median XL.
* the Diablo 2 game * the Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction expansion * your game installation must be patched to any version from at least 1.10 to 1.12.
Q: What exactly is the mod about? What does it change?
Median XL is a mod for Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction. It changes many features of the original game - basically, it revamps nearly everything. The following is a rundown of the more visible changes in the game.
Q: I like socketing stuff. Tell me what the mod has.
Median XL contains the standard Diablo 2 gems with new bonuses, as well as 5 additional gem types and 20 additional runes. Also, since sockets can now appear on other armor pieces (gloves, belts, boots), the gem and rune effects for those pieces share the same effect as on armor. So for example if gem X gives life when used on weapons, mana on armor, and resistances on shields, if you slot it into a belt you will get the armor effect (mana).
Gems
Unfortunately, the new gem types are not considered as gems in some parts of the game; for example, you cannot upgrade them with Gem Shrines. This is a game limitation (not mod).
Amber Amethyst
Weapons - chance% reanimate as: Death Gnat Armor - +Lightning Resist% Shields - Slow attacker by %
Weapons - % bonus to Attack Rating Armor - +% bonus to Dexterity Shields - +X mana when struck by enemy
Bloodstone Diamond
Weapons - +% bonus to Summoned Minion life Armor - +Fire Resist% Shields - +% bonus to Summoned Minion resistances
Weapons - +% to Spell Damage Armor - +% bonus to Strength Shields - +all resistances%
Emerald Onyx
Weapons - +X to Maximum Damage Armor - +X to Life Regen Shields - +Poison Resist%
Weapons - +% bonus to Summoned Minion damage Armor - +Cold Resist% Shields - % chance of Uninterruptible Attack
Ruby Sapphire
Weapons - +X Life after each kill Armor - +% bonus to Vitality Shields - +Fire Resist%
Weapons - +X Mana after each kill Armor - +% bonus to buff/debuff/cold skill duration Shields - +Cold Resist%
Topaz Turquoise
Weapons - +X Energy Factor to Spell Damage Armor - +% bonus to Energy Shields - +Lightning Resist%
Weapons - +X% to Mana Regen Armor - +Poison Resist% Shields - +% chance of Getting Magic Items
Rainbow Stone Skull
Weapons - +% Crushing Blow Armor - +X Crafting Points Shields - % Curse Length Reduction Weapons - +% Enhanced Damage Armor - +% Enhanced Defence Shields - % Poison Length Reduction
Gemwords
Gemwords are similar to Runewords, involving gems instead of runes. To make a gemword, use a grey (i.e. nonmagical, socketed) item, and put jewels into all sockets except one. Then fill that last socket with a gem. The resulting item will have the jewels' and gem's bonus as expected, with one difference: the gem bonus is multiplied by (number of sockets + 1).
Example
Grey long war bow (4 sockets) + 3 jewels + 1 flawless Ruby
Bonus: jewel bonuses + (flawless Ruby bonus x5) From the gem descriptions above, we see that socketing ruby gems on weapons grant +X Life after each kill, and from the official website we find that for flawless quality the value of X is 8. Thus, this gemword will give you the jewel bonuses and +(8 x5) Life after each kill (or +40 Life after each kill).
As you can see, gemwords provide an affordable option for even low level characters who have specific bonus needs without having to sacrifice a lot of power to obtain them. Unlike runewords though, gemwords are not keyed with particular names - on the item you create, only the text "Gemword!" will appear in light bronze.
Items with only one socket may also have a gemword. In this case you don't need any jewels (only room for a gem, after all), and the resulting bonus is simply (1 + 1) = 2 times the bonus of the gem.
Runes
For the full runes list, please see the official website.
Special note: The three Greater Runes are not obtainable from the simple Horadric Cube upgrade recipe, nor can they be downgraded. They are level 100, and can only be found in the Faustinville uberlevel on Destruction difficulty.
* Taha
Weapons - +40 to Maximum Damage Armor - +20 to Maximum Damage Shields - +20 to Maximum Damage
* Ghal
Weapons - +15 Energy Factor to Spell Damage Armor - +5 Energy Factor to Spell Damage Shields - +5 Energy Factor to Spell Damage
* Qor
Weapons - -12% Requirements Armor - -12% Requirements Shields - -12% Requirements
Runewords
As with gemwords, runewords can only be created in grey (nonmagical, socketed) items. Similarly, each runeword actually only requires one rune! However, this does not mean you can only make runewords in items with only one socket: just as with gemwords before, you fill up the other sockets with jewels first, and then only do you insert the rune into the final socket to get your runeword.
So how can Median XL sport 250+ runewords when each runeword consists of only 1 rune, and that there are fewer than that number of basic runes? Easy. The runeword you obtain is different depending on what base item you socket it into. For example, the rune Dol will result in the runeword Enyo when socketed into a weapon, Outlaw when socketed into boots, and Asmodai when socketed into a Paladin Shield.
Also, just as with gemwords, you still obtain the jewel bonuses on top of that! So your runeword item isn't necessarily the same as everybody elses'. In fact you may even find better jewels later to create a more powerful item of the same runeword
Q: Interesting. Does this mean I get to do more things with the cube?
CUBE RECIPES
The cube was always an underused aspect of Diablo II. Median XL overhauls its function from a cute gimmick to an important tool of war.
Crafting Points Many cube recipes work only if you have the required amount of Crafting Points on your equipped items. If you do not meet this requirement, the recipe will not work. Crafting Point requirements are listed near the recipe in grey text:
Upgrade Egg to Chicken: 200 Crafting Points
To use this recipe and turn an egg into a chicken, you would need to wear something like an armour with +183 Crafting Points and an amulet with +28 Crafting Points.
Reagents
Victim's Heart/Meditation Candle These reagents can be obtained by buying them from any magic items vendor.
Arcane Shards These reagents can be obtained by disenchanting unique items, see below.
Arcane Crystal These reagents are created by cubing Arcane Shards in sets of five.
Mystic Orb These reagents can be obtained by buying them from any magic items vendor or by killing monsters. Note that not all Mystic Orbs can be bought...
Portable Shrine These reagents are orange crucifixes that drop in late Terror and in Destruction difficulty. They allow you to create and bless items, see below.
DISENCHANTING
These recipes deal with disassembling items into cube reagents or other items.
Disenchant unique
This recipe creates Arcane Shards and Arcane Crystals, which are a required ingredient for other cube recipes. You get them by disenchanting uniques.
Unique + mana potion -> Arcane Shards + mana potion Arcane Shards x5 -> Arcane Crystal
Disenchant set
Sacrifice set items to obtain a Signet of Learning. The Signet can be consumed to gain 1 attribute point permanently. You can only use 500 signets on any single character.
Set item + mana potion -> Signet of Learning + mana potion
ITEM QUALITY UPGRADES
These recipes deal with changing one item quality to another.
Reroll low quality to regular
This recipe allows you to upgrade a low quality item to regular quality. This also rerolls the socket count on the item.
Low quality item + gem -> reroll item as regular
Reroll regular to superior
Similar to the previous recipe, you can upgrade a regular nonmagical item to a superior item. This rerolls the socket count on the item.
Regular item + gem -> reroll item as superior
Reroll nonmagical to magic
Takes any non-enchanted item (white or grey) and upgrades it to a basic magical item. Although magic items are not the most powerful items around, they are used as base items for further upgrades, notably to create honorific items.
Any nonmagical item + gem + scroll of town portal + scroll of identify -> reroll item as magic
Reroll magic to rare (gem shatter recipe)
Turn any magical item into a rare item. Note that this will slightly lower the output item level to 85% of the input item level, which limits the range of high level affixes that can appear on it.
Magic item + gem + rune -> reroll item as rare
Reroll magic to honorific
Honorific items are blank items that receive a double bonus from Mystic Orbs. This enables you to create your own custom items, provided you have some money to spend on the ingredients and the Mystic Orbs.
See the HONORIFIC AND SHRINE CRAFTS page for more details.
Magic weapon/armor + Meditation Candle + Victim's Heart -> return item as honorific
Reroll any item to unique
One of the most powerful recipes in Median XL, this recipe uses the reagents obtained by disenchanting uniques to turn a single item of your choosing into a unique. But choose wisely, because this power comes at a very high cost. This does not work on sacred items.
Non-sacred item + Arcane Crystal x2 + perfect gem -> reroll item as unique
Chaos reroll recipe
This recipe essentially ‘drops’ the item again. You may get a lowly white or magical item... or a powerful rare or unique. It depends on the roll of the dice, though high magic find helps.
Any item + jewel + healing potion + mana potion -> reroll item randomly
Affix burn recipe
This explosive alchemical combination burns all magic off an item, returning it as a basic damaged low quality item. This recipe is useful to prepare an item for a runeword.
Any item + rune + healing potion + mana potion -> reroll item as low quality
Reroll superior/magic/rare item
These recipes reroll the modifiers and socket count on any superior, magic or rare item. This is useful when you have a bad rare that could have been good, or to try and get better superior bonuses on your item before making a runeword.
Superior item + rune -> reroll item Magic item + rune -> reroll item Rare item + rune -> reroll item
Dupe recipe
Face it, this is a single player game and people have no morals. After learning that a significant part of my players dupe, I decided I might as well provide a recipe for it to give the more scrupulous players a chance to catch up with the ill-gotten gains of the cheaters.
Any gem or jewel + Arcane Crystal + town portal scroll x3 -> item x2
Trivia: In older versions of Median XL, this recipe could dupe any item. This led to players setting up shop and trading duped items to the entire community for a small fee, flooding the market with powerful items.
Zomghelp recipe
If you have very bad luck and find yourself stuck with no useful weapon or armour, use this recipe to create yourself some baseline items. The items come with very weak random stats, but have a built-in enhanced damage or defence bonus.
Magic weapon/armor + rare amulet + rare ring -> reroll item as level 1 magical item
This recipe also adds +25% Enhanced Damage (weapons) or +25% Enhanced Defense (armour) if you use it at character level 1, and an additional +2% for each higher character level. A level 40 character, for example, will get +103%.
UPTIER RECIPES
These recipes improve tiered items by upgrading them to higher tiers, improving their base statistics and maximum sockets but also increasing requirements. You cannot use these recipes to create Sacred items.
See the BASE ITEMS page for more information about item tiers.
Uptier recipe
This recipe enables you to upgrade any tiered item to the next higher tier. The modifiers on the item remain intact, but the new item will have improved base statistics and higher requirements.
Any non-sacred weapon/armor + Arcane Crystal -> return item as next higher tier
Due to an unfortunate bug in Diablo II, this recipe is limited to non-ethereal items. Sorry...
Special unique uptier recipe
When you finally have that unique you always wanted but discover to your regret that it is a low tier version and no longer useful, you can fix that.
This recipe is an improved version of the generic uptier recipe. Not only is the item upgraded to the next higher tier, but the modifiers are rerolled and replaced with those of the higher tier version of the unique.
Non-sacred unique weapon/armor + Arcane Crystal + gem -> reroll as next higher tier
AFFIX UPGRADES
These recipes deal with improving items by adding extra affixes to them.
Due to an unfortunate bug in Diablo II, these recipes are limited to non-ethereal items. Sorry...
Mystic Orb recipe
You can find Mystic Orbs or buy them for a base price of 1000 gold. Mystic Orbs add an affix to an item, making it more powerful at the cost of a +2 required level penalty. Hover over a Mystic Orb to see which items are compatible with it.
Any non-ethereal item of the appropriate type + Mystic Orb -> add orb bonus and +2 required level
Btw. You can only apply up to 15 of the same Mystic Orb (eg. +strength) to your item.
Btw. The level requirement penalty is applied after taking into account both the base item level and the level of any socket fillers. This means for example if you have a belt with required level 20, add five orbs (level penalty +10) and socket a Rha rune (required level 100), you get a belt with required level 100+10 = 110.
Btw. You cannot use this recipe on jewels.
Trophy recipe (new in 1.95)
Killing an uberquest boss will often yield his own special unique charm on Destruction difficulty. But before you grab the charm and leave the uberquest area for good, consider that many bosses also have an additional 2% chance to drop a special trophy which you can cube with the charm for a small extra bonus.
See the UBERQUESTS MENU for more information.
Any uberquest trophy + Corresponding unique charm -> return charm with added bonus
Btw. This recipe only works once per charm.
Lucky modifier recipe
This recipe allows you to use 3 runes for a chance to add an extra bonus to an item.
Any non-ethereal item + rune x3 -> returns item, may add bonuses
This recipe has 20% chance to add any of the following bonuses:
Weapon: +40% Enhanced Damage, 100% Bonus to Attack Rating Armour: +40% Enhanced Defense, Damage Reduced by 1% Amulet: +1 to All Skill Levels Ring: +10% to Spell Damage Quiver: 5% Bonus to all Attributes Jewel: +2 to Strength, +2 to Dexterity, +2 to Energy, +2 to Vitality
Btw. You can only try this recipe once on a given item. If the upgrade fails and you want to try again, your only recourse is to reroll the item.
Socket drill recipe
Use this recipe to add extra sockets to an item. The more jewels you feed this recipe, the more sockets it will create.
Non-socketed non-ethereal item + jewel x[1-6] -> returns item with [1-6] sockets
Warning: this recipe will not go over the max natural sockets an item can have. Lower tier items have a lower socket count.
See the BASE ITEMS page for more information about the maximum sockets.
PORTABLE SHRINES
In Terror and Destruction difficulty, you may find Portable Shrines, relics from the ancient labyrinth beneath Tristram. They were once part of altars that granted their Heavenly blessings to adventurers, but have lost much of their power and are now most commonly used to create enchanted items.
There are 15 types of Portable Shrines with eldritch names and a short arcane phrase giving you a clue about what the Shrine will do. However, the power of the shrine depends on Divine Will and varies from item to item.
The following Portable Shrines exist: Abandoned Shrine Creepy Shrine Eerie Shrine Fascinating Shrine Gloomy Shrine Hidden Shrine Magical Shrine Ornate Shrine Quiet Shrine Sacred Shrine Shimmering Shrine Spiritual Shrine Stone Shrine Tainted Shrine Weird Shrine
Experiment, learn and create some of the most powerful items in all of Sanctuary.
Btw. Each Portable Shrine comes with 10 charges. Each use in the cube will drain one charge. When you use up the last charge, it disappears.
Shrine crafting
Use a Portable Shrine to turn any sacred item into a powerful crafted item. The crafted item comes with several random rare modifiers and there is a high chance that some preset modifiers based on shrine type will appear as well. The preset modifiers may stack with the rare modifiers, creating some very powerful items.
Rare/unique/set/crafted sacred item + Portable Shrine -> reroll item as crafted + Portable Shrine -1 charge
Crafted items always have maximum sockets and receive a double bonus from Mystic Orbs.
What affixes will the item have? The resulting crafted item spawns with 0-3 preset affixes depending on luck and shrine type used, and 1-4 extra random rare affixes, based on the item level:
Item level 1-30 : 40% chance of 1 affix and 20% chance each of 2, 3 or 4 affixes. Item level 31-50 : 60% chance of 2 affixes and 20% chance each of 3 or 4 affixes. Item level 51-70 : 80% chance of 3 affixes and 20% chance of 4 affixes. Item level 71+ : 100% chance of 4 affixes.
The required level of a crafted item is:
[level of the highest affix * 3/4] + 10 + 3 * [number of random rare affixes]
Especially at lower levels, this formula may create items with a required level above the level of the character that crafted them. This is a feature of crafting and occurs in classic LoD as well.
Do not confuse required level, which appears on the item, with item level, which is invisible and usually equal to the monster level of the monster that dropped the item.
Btw. Due to a technical issue, you cannot use honorific items as input items.
Btw. If you ask me why your non-sacred item does not work, I murder a kitten.
Shrine blessing
A variant of shrine crafting, this recipe allows you to impart the blessings of the shrine unto an existing sacred item. This randomly adds some or all of the shrine modifiers to the item and subtracts 1 charge. You can only use this recipe once per item, so choose your shrine wisely.
Rare/crafted/honorific sacred item + Portable Shrine + Arcane Crystal -> add shrine bonuses + Portable Shrine -1 charge
The item gains 0-3 preset affixes depending on luck and shrine type used.
Due to an unfortunate bug in Diablo II, this recipe is limited to non-ethereal items. Sorry...
JEWELCRAFTING
Create your own crafted jewels. These are potentially the best jewels in the game, if you are dedicated enough to make a full set of them.
Jewelcrafting
Jewel + perfect gem + rune + healing potion + mana potion -> reroll jewel as crafted, add bonuses
The bonuses on the jewel depend on the rune used as follows:
Tir: (6 to 10)% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items Ith: All Resists +(3 to 5)%
Tir, Ith: 50 Crafting Points
Ort: Requirements –(2 to 4)% Shael: +(21 to 50) Defense
Ort, Shael: 100 Crafting Points
Lum: +(1 to 2)% to Experience Gained Lem: +(3 to 5) to All Attributes
Lum, Lem: 150 Crafting Points
Ist: +(4 to 6)% Bonus to Summoned Minion Life Ohm: +(4 to 12) to Maximum Damage
Ist, Ohm: 200 Crafting Points
Ber: (1 to 2)% Life Stolen per Hit, (1 to 2)% Mana Stolen per Hit Zod: +(1 to 3)% to Spell Damage
Ber, Zod: 250 Crafting Points
Kur: +(4 to 6)% Bonus to Summoned Minion Damage Nas: Slows Target by 1%
Kur, Nas: 300 Crafting Points
Vith: +(2 to 4)% Bonus to Summoned Minion Resistances Thai: +(6 to 15) to Minimum Damage
Vith, Thai: 350 Crafting Points
Nih: +(2 to Life on Striking in Melee, +(2 to Mana on Striking in Melee
Nih: 400 Crafting Points
CUBE RECIPES
The cube was always an underused aspect of Diablo II. Median XL overhauls its function from a cute gimmick to an important tool of war.
Crafting Points Many cube recipes work only if you have the required amount of Crafting Points on your equipped items. If you do not meet this requirement, the recipe will not work. Crafting Point requirements are listed near the recipe in grey text:

MISCELLANEOUS RECIPES
Gem upgrade recipe
You can upgrade gems to the next higher quality level. Note that unlike classic Diablo II, you only need two gems, not three.
Same gem x2 -> next higher gem quality
If you ask on the forum why you cannot cube 3 gems, you are an idiot.
Rune upgrade recipe
You can upgrade runes to the next higher or lower rune. This is useful when you need a certain exact rune to create a runeword.
Same rune x2 -> next higher rune Rune -> next lower rune
These recipes do not allow you to obtain or downgrade Great Runes (Taha, Ghal, Qor, Krys, Auhe and Sha'ad).
Unsocketing
These recipes separate the socket fillers (gems, jewels, runes) from an item and return both the item and the socket fillers.
Magical: Rare: Set: Unique: Crafted: Honorific:
Socketed item + town portal scroll x3 -> separate item and socket fillers
Nonmagical:
Socketed item + town portal scroll x3 + perfect gem x3 -> separate item and socket fillers
Btw. Nonmagical items are grey, and therefore include runewords.
Book of Summoning creation recipe
You need a Book to attempt any of the summoning uberquests. Although the ingredients are expensive, once you have a Book, you get to keep it.
See the SUMMONING UBERQUESTS page for more information on what you can do with this Book once you have it.

Skill and attribute respec recipe (New in 1.E9)
Diablo II patch 1.13 enables ingame skill and attribute respecs, both at Akara's and by collecting items. In Median, the recipe is much more accessible. A few potions will create an elixir that refunds your skill and attribute points.
Healing potion x3 + mana potion x3 -> Belladonna Elixir
* The elixir works only in Diablo II Lord of Destruction patch 1.13.

I Am Rich
Want to show the common rabble in your game how rich and powerful you are? This recipe consumes some of the rarest ubercharms and returns a completely useless gem to show to friends and strangers so they know that you are wealthy enough to waste ubercharms on a worthless gem.
See the UBERQUESTS MENU for more information.
Crystalline Flame Medaillon + Eternal Bone Pile + Demonsbane -> I Am Rich Gem
This recipe is inspired by the $1000 iPhone application that does nothing.
Cow Level portal recipe

Q: Great, last question. How are the mercenaries?
Median XL Mercenaries From Diablo Wiki Jump to: navigation, search
Mercenaries, hirelings - gotta love 'em. Median XL has not forgotten about these trusty allies, and they have been given a much-needed makeover in order for them to continue serving you well.
Basic tips
* Damage is good, but a dead mercenary deals none. Therefore, don't forget to equip them with gear that has good defence and resistances.
* The Act 3 mercenaries already have high energy and energy factor, so to really amp up their damage output give them gear with +x% to Spell Damage, -x% to Enemy Resistances, and +x to All Skills. Elemental damage buffs like Bloodlust and Elemental Totem also help them.
* Sometimes a mercenary will stop doing anything. A known game (not mod) bug which occasionally happens when you walk. To fix this, simply use a town portal.
* Mercenaries need a little time to warm up into their battle mindset - don't worry if they seem to start slowly.
